Alawite engineer abducted, tortured, and executed

The wave of abductions and killings in Syria has escalated with the death of engineer Majd Khalil, a member of the Alawite community, whose body was discovered in the city of al-Sanamayn, northern Daraa countryside, after he was kidnapped in Damascus’s al-Sumariyah district and brutally tortured.

Khalil, who worked at the Directorate of Transport, had been abducted while returning home from work. His body, showing clear signs of severe torture and multiple gunshot wounds—indicating a systematic execution—was later transferred to al-Sanamayn Hospital.

According to local sources, Khalil had previously been assaulted and insulted last month by members of an armed group affiliated with the Transitional Government forces, led by a commander known as “Abu Hudhayfa,” during a security raid in al-Sumariyah that involved arbitrary arrests and sectarian-motivated abuse.

This incident underscores the growing pattern of kidnappings, extrajudicial killings, and abuses targeting civilians and public employees across Syria, amid the inability of security agencies to contain the worsening state of lawlessness.

Human rights statistics indicate that since the beginning of 2025, around 1,072 people have been killed in retaliatory or extrajudicial executions across Syria. The victims include 1,019 men, 32 women, and 21 children, with the majority of cases driven by sectarian motives, particularly in the provinces of Homs, Hama, Latakia, and Tartus.
