1st Rojava Filmmakers’ Conference kicks off in Qamishlo

The city of Qamishlo witnessed today the launch of the first Rojava Filmmakers’ Conference, initiated by the Preparatory Committee of Rojava Filmmakers, following a series of extensive meetings and discussions it held with professionals working in the film sector. The conference aims to discuss the current state of the sector and prospects for its development. It is being held at al-Burj Restaurant Hall.

The conference activities began with a minute of silence in tribute to the souls of the martyrs. Afterwards, conference preparatory committee member Diyar Hasso delivered a speech in which he remembered the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for their homeland and played a prominent role in the artistic field, including martyr Khalil Dag and filmmaker Yılmaz Güney, along with a number of other filmmakers.

Diyar Hasso also reviewed the steps that preceded the conference and the challenges facing the film sector in the region. He highlighted “the importance of this conference in discussing the future of cinema in the region and ways to strengthen its positive aspects in a manner that contributes to the development of cinema, by identifying all forms of required support through the proposals and outcomes emerging from the conference. This is aimed at understanding the reasons behind shortcomings in cinema through today’s discussions and reaching results that ensure the development of cinema in the region.”

The three-day conference is expected to conclude with the adoption of a set of decisions related to the future of cinema in Rojava, in addition to announcing a new action plan aimed at developing the film sector during the coming period.
