Proposals and warnings from Syrian politicians to As-Suwayda protesters

For more than 40 days, the people of As-Suwayda, which has a Druze majority, have continued their protests without stopping, in Al-Sir Al-Karama Square in the center of the city.

The protests, which intensified on the 17th of last August, have carried a number of demands since their inception, the most important of which is “the implementation of UN Resolution No. 2,254” related to a ceasefire and a comprehensive political settlement of the situation in Syria, in addition to “Assad stepping down from power.”

Previously, most of the protests taking place in As-Suwayda were limited to improving the living and service conditions in the region. However, the recent rise in fuel prices caused the situation to explode in the region and broke the people of As-Suwayda from their silence regarding the practices of the Damascus government and its stubbornness in developing a solution to the Syrian crisis in a way that suits the demands of the people. Which placed more than 90% of the Syrian people below the poverty line.

As a result of the pain that the people suffered"

Member of the Central Committee of the Kurdish Left Party in Syria, Kamiran Kanjo, believes that the people of the city of As-Suwayda are no longer able to "bear the pressure exerted by the authoritarian regime and the repressive method against them, the people of Syria in general, and the mercenaries who gathered around this authoritarian regime."

Al-Kanjo explained in an interview with ANHA's agency, “This movement taking place today is the result of the people’s pain, and this pain is what the Syrian regime made us feel in the former regions of NE, Syria and the injustice to which the Arabs and Kurds were subjected.”

Al-Kanjo called on the people of As-Suwayda that their protests be “far from carrying weapons and should be directed towards just demands that achieve the people’s freedom and full rights that concern all Syrians, not just the people of As-Suwayda.”

Warning of external interference

For his part, the researcher and political thinker, Dr. Ahmed Al-Darzi, believes that “the peaceful movement taking place in the city of As-Suwayda is an expression of the demands of the people in the city and their natural right, like the rest of the cities in Syria, to improve the general condition of services for the city and all Syrian cities.”

Al-Darzi said in an interview with ANHA's agency that the city of As-Suwayda “is witnessing external interventions by France and Jordan, and they are trying to inflame the situation in the city, and our people in the city of As-Suwayda must be careful of these parties that seek to divert the path of the peaceful movement and sow chaos in the city in order to serve their interests and keep the people away from their basic demand.”

Syrian-Syrian solutions

Al-Darzi pointed out to deal with caution with the parties that are trying to distort the people’s rightful demands in these protests, saying, “All of these matters require a different approach to separate all issues and work to end this movement with Syrian-Syrian solutions and a Syrian-Syrian transformation between all existing parties and the search for the unity of Syrian lands.” And its territorial sovereignty, indivisibility, and the establishment of a new regional order.”

Al-Darzi concluded his speech, "The basic message of this movement is to distinguish between the rightful demands on the economic and political levels and what the Western powers want to invest in the As-Suwayda issue within the framework of the regional and international conflict."
