Iraqi parliamentarian: Turkey follows a policy of thirsting Iraq, plundering our share of water

On Saturday, a member of the Parliamentary Agriculture, Water and Marshes Committee, Representative Rafik al-Salihi, considered Turkey's prevention of releasing Iraq's water share from the Tigris and Euphrates rivers as a means of pressure aimed at achieving Ankara's goals and ambitions in northern Iraq.

The Turkish state has blocked the waters of the Tigris River through the Ilisu Dam, at a time when the waters of the Euphrates River have been blocked by the Ataturk Dam and prevented its flow into the Syrian territories for more than two years, as the Euphrates water level has decreased to historical levels, affecting the lives of millions of people in the country.

The Turkish state uses cross-border rivers in the framework of the war it is waging against the Syrian and Iraqi peoples, as the Turkish occupation state has been stealing the two countries' share of the waters of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers 5 years ago, at a rate ranging between 60 and 70%.

On the water policies of the Turkish occupation, parliamentarian Rafik al-Salhi told Al-Maalouma that "the Turkish regime does not hesitate to use all legal and illegal weapons to achieve its ambitions, including the water weapon to thirst the Iraqis."

He added, "The Iraqi government has already warned its Turkish counterpart to cut off economic and trade relations with Turkey in the event that it continues to cut Iraq's water share."

Al-Salhi affirmed, "The Parliamentary Agriculture, Water and Marshes Committee is keen to legislate laws that contribute to reforming the agricultural sector, supporting farmers, and working to introduce modern methods in the field of irrigation by developing a comprehensive vision in coordination with the government and working to mature draft laws related to the agricultural sector."
