​​​​​​​Upcoming vote on important decision regarding the missing during Syrian crisis

Today, the United Nations General Assembly will vote to establish institution that will work to reveal the fate of an estimated 100,000 people missing or forcibly disappeared during the crisis in Syria.

This vote comes as a result of intense pressure exerted by the families of the missing, along with groups and organizations, to open this file and reveal the fate of the missing and forcibly disappeared in Syria since 2011.

Ahead of the scheduled vote, on 29 June, Amnesty International’s Secretary-General, said “UN member states can provide a way to realize families’ right to the truth by creating an institution focuse on victim dedicated to provide them with what happened to their loved ones".

And called on UN member states to heed the calls of Syrian families and survivors who have been at the forefront of efforts to establish such a Body and vote in favor of the resolution, according to a statement by Amnesty International.

By creating a institution focused on this issue, the UN can help them find some of the answers they deserve. At least 100,000 people are believed to have gone missing or forcibly disappeared in Syria since 2011, at the hands of the government's security services in the first place.

This institution will provide a single way for recording issues, consolidating existing information, and coordinating with other existing mechanisms to address this problem".
