Damascus Government blockade involves bread and water to residents of Shahba canton
The local administration, municipalities and environment body of Afrin and Shahba canton raised the alarm; As a result of the blockade, which is threatening many vital sectors, the body stressed the existence of a threat to citizens' lives, namely, stopping water pumping and stopping bakeries.
For more than 9 months, the blockade of Shahba canton has resulted in the loss of fuel, leading to the disruption of the main services provided to the people of Shahba canton, especially generators supplying electricity to the canton, and has created many problems in many vital sectors.
The power outage came a day after the local administration, municipalities and environment body of Afrin canton and Shahba announced a new rationing of electricity and water, during the last 27 April, as fuel ran out.
A bitter and dangerous reality
The co-chair of the Local Administration, Municipalities and Environment Body of Afrin canton and Shahba Mohammed Sheikho confirmed during a special statement to ANHA’s agency that the subject of the blockade, in particular the prohibition of the passage of fuel into the canton, threatens the red lines of citizens in Shahba canton, as a risk of water pumping stopping and bakeries stopping.
The ongoing blockade in the coming days poses a threat not only to the continuity of water pumping, but also to 174 machineries that distribute potable water to residents of the canton, according to Sheikho.
2023 Projects Discontinued
Commenting on the direct effects of the blockade on projects under the Local Administration, Municipalities and Environment Body's scheme for Afrin and Shahba canton, Sheikho said that they had been unable to begin implementation of the scheme, despite the fact that some 4 months had passed since the new year as a result of the ongoing and unjust blockade.
The Local Administration, Municipalities and Environment Body of Afrin and Shahba canton had developed a blueprint for improving the province's service realities, through several programmes; These include drilling wells to increase flocking the water to houses’ citizens and restoring a number of decaying streets, as well as maintaining sewage lines and increasing the number of diesel generators.
