The international conditions that came after the end of World War II in 1945 helped the Syrians achieve their independence, as the United Nations supported the decision of the independence and unity of Syria, with a majority of the members, and thus the Syrian government and people celebrated Independence Day for the first time on April 17, 1946 during the presidency of Shukri al-Quwatli.

The stage of independence was followed by a Syrian spring, and political life began to appear in Damascus and the rest of the Syrian cities, and people in the Syrian Republic began to exchange political conversations among themselves with terms such as democracy, justice, freedom of expression, and the parliamentary system.

This spring did not last long, as the "National Action League" contributed to laying the intellectual and organizational foundations for radical Arabism, as described by many experts, on the basis of which the Ba'ath Party developed itself after independence.

As a result, the stage of coups began in Syria, leading to the Baath Party's took of power, and Syria later gradually turned into a nation-state ruled by one party, with no minimum rights and freedoms.

The national and sectarian militarization practiced by the Baath Party in Syria led, over time, to the division of Syrian society, and despite the tight security and military grip, this did not prevent the emergence of manifestations of disobedience and uprisings, most notably the events of Hama in 1982, Palmyra prison, and the Qamishlo uprising in 2004.

These problems accumulated until 2011, when the Syrian crisis began and was exploited by greedy countries in the Syrian lands. Russia and Iran took advantage of the weakness of the Damascus government, while Turkey used the so-called Syrian opposition to occupy many Syrian regions and lands.

The Syrian opponent and head of the Modernity and Democracy Party for Syria, Firas Qassas, spoke to ANHA’s agency about this: "Unfortunately, the anniversary of the country's independence from French colonialism passes, and Syria is experiencing a complex and multidimensional existential crisis, a dimension related to the continuation of tyranny in its many aspects, the Assad politician represented by the Syrian regime that controls the majority of The Syrian space, and the religious one embodied in the control of the terrorist Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham over Idlib governorate, and the tyranny of the occupation that controls the areas occupied by Turkey supported by traitors factions in the areas of Afrin, al-Bab, Tal Abyad, and Serêkaniyê/Ras al-Ain, over large areas of Syria.

He added, "This image is linked to the reality prior to its formation, the reality before 2011, which bears full responsibility for a discriminatory, tyrannical political regime that ruled the country for half a century and represented a purely internal colonizer, according to the concept of occupation/internal colonization that was popularized by writers and intellectuals of Latin America, as it resembles the relationship between the tyrannical ruling authority in Syria and its people with the relationship of the French colonizer and occupier of the Syrian state, and perhaps even more ugly and heinous, as it is a relationship of control, control, exploitation, pure hegemony, and a relationship of subjugation, oppression and violence that falls completely against the interest of society and the country and only in the interest of the power class alone.

Many factors contributed to the return of the occupation... marginalization and racism

The Syrian dissident, Firas Qassas, touched on the factors that led to the return of the occupation, by saying: “The Syrian regime’s policy that distorted the concept of belonging to the country in favor of a supremacist, gangster, Arab national affiliation, its policy that enshrined racist concepts that do not recognize anything other than the identity of the Syrian Arabs, and one central concept of the state is considered The flexible, decentralized formulas of the state body, in terms of separation and antagonism, the Assadist policy that established a traditional, medieval, sectarian formula for religion and led society against enlightenment.

He added, "The parties marginalized in favor of the center, and the countryside in favor of the city, which suppressed the other political voice, perpetuated the masculinity of societal values, and used violence against the popular movement, all of which led many sectors of Syrian society to cooperate and engage with terrorist organizations and to consider any ethnic expression of identity and legitimate existence as In the Kurdish case, there were calls for separatism, and it led another sector of the Syrians to support the Turkish government's fascism in occupying many regions.

The Turkish occupation is the most dangerous... a settlement dimension

Qassas assessed, during his speech, the seriousness of the occupations of the Syrian territories, and said: "The most dangerous occupation, not only for Syria, but for any society and country, is that which adds to its occupation formula a settlement and displacement dimension, a dimension that turns the occupation from a practice of exploitation, oppression and tyranny into a crime against humanity, which is What is happening now in the case of the Turkish occupation of Syrian lands, as it is a settlement occupation with all the meaning of this concept and aims to bring about a demographic change based on the displacement of indigenous citizens from their regions and replacing them with others belonging to another Syrian ethnicity, with the aim of obliterating and representing the identity of the occupied regions to satisfy the tendencies A Turkish Turanian national phobia towards Kurdish nationalism and culture, which began to express its rights and itself freely in those areas.

A message to the Syrians

The Syrian opponent sent a message to the general Syrian people, saying: "What is required of the Syrians is the same as what is required of every people who have been subjected to occupation by another country, to resist the Turkish occupation, and to be aware of the discord that Turkey has planted in the face of the values of coexistence between the Syrians, between the Arabs and the Kurds in a way Specificity, the Syrians are required to be aware of these dangers and the awareness that the Syrians are Arabs, Kurds, Assyrians, Syriacs, Turkmen, Circassians and Armenians, all of them face the same existential challenge, and that survival, freedom, dignity, democracy and the ability to realize the human self of the various Syrian components depend on the Syrians standing together in one place, and working according to this understanding completely and decisively, and this will only be achieved by resisting all forms of tyranny and inflicting a crushing defeat on it.

He added, "Resisting the Turkish occupation and its final expulsion from Syria, and building a ceiling for the values of coexistence that achieves recognition of the other and meets the requirements of the pluralistic, decentralized, and democratic formula for Syria, and aspiration together towards an effective and positive contribution to the process of civilizational development and human progress. This is what the Syrians must work on now and forever."
