​​​​​​​Suspension of Tishreen Dam for week as Turkey's water policies

The General Administration said in a written statement, "Due to the severe shortage of the water supply coming from Turkey for a full year  and the extent of its impact on the lakes on the Euphrates River, the decision was taken to stop the Tishreen Dam for a week in order to save the 2023 agricultural season."

It explained, "The priority of the General Administration of Dams is to secure drinking water and irrigation water for agricultural lands for the residents of NE Syria."

It pointed out that "if the water supply coming from Turkey remains weak, we will have to stop the Tishreen Dam for intermittent periods, to be determined through a program studied by the General Administration of Dams and the concerned institutions."

According to the General Administration of Dams, "the suspension of the Tishreen Dam will not affect the irrigation of lands and drinking water within the week of the suspension."

The Executive Council of the Autonomous Administration announced the approval of stopping the Tishreen Dam for a week, starting from 1 March.

Turkey releases less than 200 cubic meters per second from the Euphrates River water to the Syrian territories, unlike the agreement signed between Damascus and Ankara in 1987, which stipulates that Syria must obtain at least 500 cubic meters per second.

The lakes of the dams have depleted their strategic reserves in the past months, as the continued prevention of the Euphrates water by the Turkish occupation, where the matter has worsened with the continued curbing of the Euphrates during the Euphrates flood season.
