​​​​​​​Ashrafieh- Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhoods face humanitarian catastrophe due to siege

The Damascus Government continues to obstruct the arrival of aid to the neighborhoods of Sheikh Maqsoud, Ashrafieh and al-Shahba camp, in light of the economic conditions the Syrian people are going through and the catastrophic earthquake that struck the region.

In this regard, the co-chair of the Social Affairs and Labor Authority in the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, Maryam Al-Ibrahim, said, "Since the first hours of the earthquake disaster, on February 6, the Autonomous Administration in North and East Syria took the initiative to provide aid to the affected areas, while the Damascus Government and the Turkish occupation state closed The doors and crossings in front of this aid.

The disaster is greater in Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh

Mariam explained, "The Autonomous Administration delegation visited the neighborhoods of Sheikh Maqsoud, Ashrafieh, and al-Shahba camp a week before the earthquake, and visited them after the earthquake disaster, and found that there was a large percentage of displaced people who went to the tents, to escape another earthquake disaster."

She emphasized, "The Autonomous Administration is ready and has capabilities of tents, fuel and aid, but unfortunately, no party has taken the initiative to receive these relief and humanitarian materials, and we were surprised by the indifference of anyone to what is happening in these areas."

Two-thirds of aid to the Damascus Government in return for its entry

Mariam explained, "The Damascus Government only received fuel, and there was a fee for bringing it in, which is taking two-thirds of the quantity sent to the besieged areas affected by the earthquake."

And she emphasized that "the Autonomous Administration wants to enter all the materials it has, and it does not also exclude the areas of the Damascus Government and the areas occupied by the Turkish occupation state."

And it indicated, "The Autonomous Administration sent aid to all the affected areas in Syria, not to specific areas."

Ashrafieh and Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhoods were besieged before the disaster of the earthquake

Mariam said, "The Damascus Government used to prevent the entry of any materials into the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods before the earthquake disaster," adding: "We all know that these two neighborhoods are completely besieged, and we saw on the ground the humanitarian catastrophe, as a result of the lack of most basic materials, and there is hunger and cold."

She emphasized, "The goal of the Autonomous Administration was purely humanitarian, and this goal became clear to everyone near and far, while the Damascus government took advantage of this circumstance to achieve its endeavors."

At the end of her speech, Mariam warned of a humanitarian catastrophe in the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods if the siege continued.
