​​​​​​​Researcher in terrorism issues warns: ISIS may "destroy walls" if international neglect continues

 The "Humanity and Security" campaign, launched by the Internal Security Forces in cooperation with the Syrian Democratic Forces, continues in al-Hol camp, where families of foreign ISIS mercenaries are present, since August 25, with the aim of searching for mercenary cells there, after the number of killings increased in the camp.

 During the last period, ISIS mercenaries and their families worked to establish the mentality of mercenaries in the minds of the camp residents and dig tunnels.

 Despite the defeat of ISIS by the Syrian Democratic Forces after the latter liberated the city of Al-Baghuz in 2019, ISIS is still trying to re-establish its activity, taking advantage of the threats and attacks of the Turkish occupation on northern and eastern Syria.

In January, ISIS mercenaries launched a bloody attack on the Al-Sinaa prison, killing more than a hundred fighters of the Syrian Democratic Forces.

 In a previous statement to our agency, Farhad Shami, the official of the media center of the Syrian Democratic Forces, considered, "Al-Hol camp is the second attempt to establish the caliphate, as the third generation of ISIS is emerging here, which is more dangerous than ISIS."

 The commander of US operations in the Middle East, General Michael Corella, reiterated this assessment during his visit to the camp in early September, saying: "ISIS seeks to take advantage of the conditions in the camp, with approximately 80 births in the camp every month, this place is a real breeding ground for the next generation of ISIS.

 As a senior Pentagon official, Dana Stroul, said in previous statements, "ISIS views detention centers as its new army."

 "It sees al-Hol and Roj camp, and the children in those camps, as the next generation of ISIS," she added.

 ISIS and the demolition of walls and the new generation

 The researcher specialized in terrorism issues, Hassan Abu Haniyeh, considered in an exclusive interview with our agency that "there is a big problem in the issue of the new generation of ISIS, since the international coalition, relying mainly on the Syrian Democratic Forces, eliminated the spatial caliphate of ISIS, which ended in the Baghouz area in  March 2019, there were big problems. In al-Hol, there are about 65 thousand ISIS families (children and women), in addition to the rest of the camps and prisons, there are about more than 10,000 ISIS militants,” noting that these large numbers “need great international support at all levels.”  Including security.

He added, "It is true that ISIS has ended spatially, but it has turned into a decentralized organization, and therefore operates according to guerrilla warfare and launches semi-regular attacks in Iraq and Syria, and therefore the organization remains dangerous, and it has a well-known strategy towards the issue of prisons and detainees, and from there the organization launches the operation (destroying walls)." 

  Abu Haniyeh explained, "ISIS took control of Iraq after it took control of the Taji and Abu Ghraib prisons, by removing its fighters from these two prisons. What it did recently in the al-Sinaa prison in Ghweran is part of this strategy, and a clear indication that it will not give up its ambitions to rebuild the organization, and aspires to  re-establishing his caliphate in these geographical areas.”

 On July 21, 2013, ISIS mercenaries attacked "Al-Taji prison" and "Abu Ghraib prison" in the capital, Baghdad, as part of the "plan to demolish the walls", announced by the leader of ISIS mercenaries, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, a year before the date of implementation.  This attack resulted in the smuggling of about 1,000 mercenaries, including more than 500 ISIS leaders.

 Abu Haniyeh stressed that "the demolition of walls has become an approach followed by ISIS. It may exploit any state of vacuum and chaos, as it did so in Khorasan in Afghanistan when ISIS took control of Nangarhar prison and released its fighters (in August 2020), and it also did so in Mozambique.  , and other regions.

 Since the announcement of the physical elimination of ISIS mercenaries, the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria has always called on the countries concerned to take back foreign ISIS mercenaries and their families who are in prisons and camps, but so far there are no serious initiatives regarding this issue.

 Very dangerous repercussions in the event that Western countries do not restore their ISIS subjects.

The researcher specializing in terrorism issues warned that foreign countries’ failure to retrieve children and women from al-Hol camp is “a dangerous matter, especially with the decline in international interest in the file of cross-border terrorism, as a result of Western preoccupation with the Russian war on Ukraine, as well as the geopolitical competition between the United States and China in  Taiwan and the South China Sea, as well as the health and financial repercussions that arose after the Corona pandemic, climate issues, and domestic terrorism.

 He added, "International interest in foreign fighters and their families, and their reintegration and rehabilitation into European societies, has declined, despite American calls about this, and they have focused only on the military and security approach, and this is a dangerous matter."

 Abu Haniyeh believes that "Europe's failure to restore ISIS fighters will have serious repercussions for a long time, which will constitute great pressures and additional efforts on the Syrian Democratic Forces, countries that cannot afford them."

 The Autonomous Administration is doing its best to secure these prisons and camps, but the siege and the closure of the Tel Kojer crossing, as well as the Turkish threats to invade the area and its daily bombardment of the area and targeting by drones, the leaders who contributed to the elimination of ISIS, including the martyrs Jiyan Tolhadan.  Khabour and Barin Botan, who fought ISIS, promoted ISIS mercenaries as an opportunity for them to rearrange their ranks and revive what they call the caliphate again.

 Turkey is the actual sponsor of chaos and ISIS

 The Justice and Development government has long obstructed the final elimination of ISIS and obstructed the trial of ISIS mercenaries in Turkey. Autonomous Administration and Pentagon officials also warned that Turkey's announced plans to invade northern and eastern Syria would release ISIS mercenaries from their prisons.

 Earlier, the mercenary Abdullah Ismail Ahmed, one of the most dangerous leaders of ISIS mercenaries, and responsible for all terrorist attacks in the city of Hasakah and its countryside, and the largest of these attacks, the attack on the prison in Hasaka, admitted that they were receiving instructions from the operating rooms located inside Turkey, managed by Turkish Intelligence (MİT).

 In this context, Hassan Abu Haniyeh, a researcher and specialist in terrorism, believes that "Turkey is always trying to exploit the circumstances and the absence of international interest in order to establish a buffer zone, and Erdogan may take advantage of these circumstances and implement his threats, which will actually negatively affect the region, and ISIS will exploit that and chaos will spread,  Those in prisons and camps will be able to return again, and establish another caliphate.”

 He added, "Things have become very dangerous and there is no international response to this danger, and there is not enough interest in this file. Biden's strategy towards Syria is not clear, and Turkey will take advantage of that, and the emergence of another ISIS caliphate remains only a matter of time."
