​​​​​​​Law expert calls on Iraqi government to take action against Turkey`s crimes

Last Wednesday, the Turkish state carried out a massacre against tourists in Perekhe village in the district of Zakho. More than 30 people became victims to the attack.

National political figures have called for the closure of border-gates with Turkey and to halt diplomatic relations. Since Wednesday and until now, thousands of Iraqi`s have been protesting and demanding that Turkish forces withdraw from Iraqi territory. Protestors lit Turkish flags on fire and occupied the embassy and institutions of the Turkish Ministry of Foregin Affairs.

Iraqi political observer and law expert Faysal Rekan spoke to our agency regarding the attack and stated that a complaint should be filed to the Security Council in order to stop Turkish violations and interference on Iraqi territory.

Rekan stated: “Along with the mass demonstrations in different cities of Iraq, the emergency meeting held by the parliament which condemned the attack and made a request for a complaint to the Security Council and international organizations, the Iraqi government should take necessary steps as an answer to this. We see that this is a very important step. Statutes of the United Nations and the Geneva Convention prohibits attacks by one state against another. It rejects occupation and the presence of one state`s forces on the territory of another without prior approval, evidently since there are natural relations and no war between the two states.”

Rekan underlined the importance of widening diplomatic relations, especially with Iraqi allies in order to gain support from them in case the Security Council makes a decision on the matter.

Rekan continued: “Permanent member states of the Security Council should take action to prevent the use of veto, especially by the U.S. We should not forget that relations between the Turkish state and Russia are good and due to this, negotiations should be made with them as well. A decision of the Security Council would put pressure on Turkey and expose them to obstacles and sanctions, especially since Turkey is going through a tough economic situation.

Rekan demanded that the Turkish ambassador should be warned and reprimanded in written form in order for the Security Council to recognize the dangers of the matter. He further demanded that Iraqi forces deploy anti-aircraft weapons and missiles along the border between the two countries.

He further pointed out that despite Iraq having a sufficient military force and being capable of defending their terrirtory, Iraq`s situation and political conflicts between political parties does not allow for it to enter a long-term war.

Rekan concluded by saying: “Alongside mass demonstrations against the Turkish attacks, the most appropriate would be to file complaints with international organizations and the Security Council. In this way, Turkey will recognize the danger to its interests, especially trade.”
