Serekaniye IDPs: Turkish settlement project worsens Syrian crisis

The Serekaniye Displaced Committee considered the Turkish settlement project a disastrous step and politicization of the refugee file to legitimize Turkey's settlement operations.

Serekaniye IDPs issued a statement which was read in three languages (Arabic by Rayan Okhta, Kurdish by Rehan Khalil, English by Lilav Sheikhmus) in front of the UNHCR building in Qamishlo.

Banners were raised, reading, "Your terrorism does not undermine the will to return," and "No occupation, no demographic change."

The statement clarified that since the Justice and Development Party took power in Turkey at the end of 2002 and gradually took control of the main joints in the structure of the Turkish state.

It has also tried to exploit the changes on the ground in the Middle East, by providing public support to political currents (Brotherhood).

The statement referred to the statements of the President of the Turkish occupation state, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, about his country's readiness to establish a new settlement project in the occupied areas to settle one million Syrian refugees, and added: "All these schemes led by the current regime in Turkey and after its occupation of vast areas in Syria, which are estimated Up to 9,000 square kilometers, through a series of terrorist military operations in Syria and displacement of its original inhabitants.

In its statement, the Serekaniye Displaced Committee called on the “International Community, the American and Russian administrations, and the UN organizations to intervene immediately to stop these settlement projects.
