Basque Parliament prepares to recognize AANES

In a statement made to ANHA Oihana Etxebarrieta said:

We salute the people of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria and wish them a year full of achievements for rights and peace. As a municipalist force, we know how important it is that decision making and policy management should be done as close to the people as possible, with their full participation. We will always support the daily struggle of the government the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, and we continue to walk alongside them.

Regarding the latest ISIS attack on the Ghweiran prison in the city of Hasaka she said:

''The attack is the result of the little support that the internal community gives to THE Kurdish population of northern Syria. They were the ones who fought for all humanity against ISIS and now no one supports them in the management of the prisoners, the families.. the international community has to take responsibility once and for all and that it could reach the international court would be important for to be able to put this shared responsibility on the table.

The Parliament of  Catalonia recognition to the AANES

Full institutional recognition at the international level is necessary, for as much as legitimacy comes from local citizenship, the possibilities of alliances and the creation of internationalist links are necessary to move forward in this globalised world. There are many small institutional forms (regional, autonomous, small independent countries...) that believe in another way of being and working in the world.

Responding to a question whether the step be taken by the Spanish Parliament she said:

I don't think so. It is no coincidence that the recognition comes from a parliament in which the majority is in favour of the right to decide (by those who are in favour of independence processes or by those who want more autonomy). For years the Spanish state has been hindering and criminalising the people's struggle for independence and autonomy. 

The Basque Country Parliament

This is a request that has been made by different organisations and local movements. There has not yet been a debate about it, but for our part we are in favour of being able to promote it and support it.

The government of Basque did not recognize the AANES, is this for Turkey's sake, is it related fears on your accounts held in Turkish banks?

Obviously, Turkish diplomacy is always on the lookout for statements and decisions in favour of Kurdish citizens wherever they are. I can only speak on behalf of the work that the different groups in the Basque parliament do and we have always tried to reach points of agreement to denounce the attacks or support the different struggles of the Kurdish people.

If the Basque Country recognizes the AANES, how your relations will be with the AANES and how important this step will be if taken?

It seems to me that it would facilitate avenues for joint institutional work. It already has social legitimacy, and now we need institutional legitimacy. As I said previously, my political group, EH Bildu, will work in that direction.
