 Kobani - Maysa Akkari

7 years have passed since ISIS began its attack on Kobani canton. In this file, we will shed light on why the Turkish ISIS plans failed, starting from September 15, and what were the objectives of that attack? How did Turkey seek to achieve what ISIS could not do in the region?, and what were they  Its intentions? Moreover, what should the international community do to deter Turkish attacks and threats on the north and east of Syria, and to stand by the people of the region who fought together against ISIS.

 Kobane battle

The battle of Kobani, which began on September 15, 2014 and ended with the victory of the People's Protection Units and Women at the expense of ISIS mercenaries on January 26, 2015, has become a rebirth for the people of the region.

The battle of Kobani began with an attack launched by ISIS with thousands of mercenaries who gathered from all over the world, carrying the same extremist ideology, on the Kobani canton from three eastern, western and southern axes, using heavy weapons, including tanks, armored vehicles and rocket launchers, which it seized after taking control of several cities in Syria.  and Iraq.

ISIS attacked the Kobani canton and managed to occupy the majority of the villages belonging to the canton, even reaching the city and controlling the largest part of it, until some parties and countries, such as the Turkish state, according to its President Erdogan, bet on losing the Kobani battle.

While no forces withstood the brutality of ISIS, which posed a threat to the whole world, and not only to the north and east of Syria;  The YPG and YPJ resisted with their light weapons and managed to break the thorn of ISIS in the city of Kobani after 134 days of legendary resistance.

The international coalition cooperated with some of the Peshmerga forces with the People’s and Women’s Protection Forces to defeat ISIS in Kobani, so that the latter became the beginning of a new start for the people of northern and eastern Syria, to liberate all areas occupied by ISIS, up to their last stronghold in Al-Baghouz on March 23, 2019.

The goal.. Spreading extremist ideology on the Syrian-Turkish border

Khaled Barkal, one of the witnesses to that stage, and he was at the time serving as the deputy co-chair of the Executive Council in Kobani canton, told our agency that "the aim of the attack launched by ISIS on the region with Turkish support, was to break the will of the people of the region. Thus, thwarting the democratic nation's project represented by the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, which Turkey saw as success, and became a threat to its fascism and expanding day by day, so it directed ISIS towards the region.

Barkal asserts that "Turkey is still afraid of the democratic nation's project, in particular its realization of the principle of coexistence and brotherhood of peoples among the people of the north and east of Syria, so after the defeat of ISIS, it went to the extremism and the goal is one, which is to spread extremist ideology on the Syrian-Turkish border to impede the spread of democratic thought.

Barkal points out that Turkey's attempts are still continuing to eliminate the democratic project for the people of the north and east of Syria, noting that "it knows that this project, will be the beginning of solving all the problems of the Middle East, not the Kurdish issue or the Syrian crisis."

Khaled Barkal is currently the co-chair of the Legislative Council of the Civil Administration in Raqqa, the city that was the capital of mercenaries in Syria, and was liberated in the context of the campaigns to defeat ISIS that launched from Kobani.

The repercussions of the victory in Kobani

Perhaps the revolution in northern and eastern Syria, which started from the city of Kobani on July 19, 2012, formed a knot for the Turkish state that tried from time to time to defeat by various means.  and the "Free Army", and pushed ISIS to attack.

There is no doubt that ISIS’s targeting of Kobani carried, in its political and ideological dimension, a targeting of the Autonomous Administration mainly, as the fall of Kobani would have brought down one of the three cantons of the Autonomous Administration, which paves the way for the fall of the rest of the provinces and dispelling the project that was and still is adjacent to the geographical borders,  Where ISIS is distributed, whether in Iraq or Syria.

From this point of view, there is no dispute that the victory besides being a major defeat for ISIS, is a victory for the AA project, and a major push forward for it, and thus a defeat for Turkey and extremist ideology.

The Autonomous Administration was announced on the 21st of January 2014, followed by the special announcement in the city of Kobani on the 27th of the same month and year, and the administrative division of the administration areas was divided into 3 regions: "Al-Jazirah Region, Euphrates Region, and Afrin Region".  Each region includes in its structure counties, regions, cities, counties, and towns.

 Revenge for defeating ISIS

A member of the executive body of the Democratic Union Party in the Euphrates region, Ahmed Sheikho, points out that Turkey, in order to avenge the defeat of ISIS, cooperated with ISIS again.  A massacre was committed against the people of Kobani by ISIS in the summer of 2015, months after the liberation of Kobani.

Ahmed Sheikho says, "This did not satisfy Turkey, so it occupied several Syrian regions as an alternative plan, using Syrian mercenaries as a tool to achieve its interests and ambitions in the region. After the failure of ISIS and the defeat of Turkey, the latter could not bear the idea of the victory of the people of the region and their administration, and the administration expanded and included all components  and the sects of the north and east of Syria, so Turkey and its mercenaries directly occupied the Syrian lands, and occupied the Jarablus, Al-Bab and Azaz regions, and then some areas of the Autonomous Administration.

With the aim of separating the three cantons and regions and weakening the Autonomous Administration, Turkey occupied Afrin canton on March 18, 2018, after a heroic resistance by the people of the region against the Turkish occupation and its mercenaries.  Tal Abyad, after the attacks on it on October 9, 2019.

Sheikho asserts that Turkey has not been able to achieve what it aspires to in the region, and faced the resistance of its sons;  Those who have proven that they are committed to their land and their ideology towards democracy and coexistence, and this is what Turkey fears and wants to eliminate. Therefore, Turkey began waging a cold war against the people of the north and east of Syria through several means.

 private war

Whether by waging a proxy war against the region of north and east Syria, or through its direct intervention and occupation of several regions in the region, or by waging a private war against the people of the region, Turkey does not stop its attempts to make its plans a success and direct strikes to the Autonomous Administration in north and east Syria, and to strip its people of the gains that have been made.  achieved thanks to the sacrifices of her children.

Regarding the special war that Turkey is pursuing in the region, Ahmed Sheikho says: "Turkey has recently followed the methods of special war against the people of the north and east of Syria, starting with launching almost daily attacks on the border areas with the Turkish occupation and its mercenaries, with the aim of intimidating the people and emptying the region of its residents,  In addition to launching drone attacks on civilians and military personnel.

Last August, 11 civilians and soldiers were martyred and more than 20 people were wounded as a result of Turkish bombing with drones and artillery on different areas in north and east Syria.

Sheikho adds: In addition, spreading false news among the people of the region that would intimidate the people, distort the reputation of the administration and reduce the people’s confidence in it, not to mention the methods that target the young group in particular, such as spreading drugs among the youth, and other methods that distance the youth from the path of the revolution  And lowering the water level of the Euphrates.

The occupied territories..a hotbed of extremism and dangers from the return of ISIS

In one way or another, ISIS has been eliminated militarily, but there are risks of its return. Many of the princes, judges and members of ISIS, who still carry extremist ideology, are fighting the people of northern and eastern Syria under the banner of the Turkish occupation in the occupied areas.

Many of the names that were within the ranks of ISIS mercenaries were documented, and they are now in the ranks of the mercenary factions affiliated with the Turkish occupation with different names and banners, in addition to the appearance of video clips in which the ISIS flag was raised in the city of Serêkaniyê / Ras al-Ain after its occupation by Turkey.

While the extremist ideology carried by ISIS posed a threat to the whole world, and after its elimination in its last strongholds, the dangers of its return are still continuing, as the occupied areas by the Turkish occupation state have become a danger to the region, and become a focus for spreading extremist ideology and revitalizing ISIS again.  .

Despite the dangers posed by the occupied areas and the mercenaries of Turkey to the regions of northern and eastern Syria and the world at large, the international community remains on the sidelines, instead of supporting the people of the region against Turkey's mercenaries and the latter's plans to eliminate democratic thought and spread extremist ideology in the region.
