Politician: besieging region economically, Russia wants concessions in favor of Syrian regime

Ismail Khaled said, “Russia’s goal in using its veto against the opening of Tel Koçer (al-Yaroubia) Crossing is to besiege the regions of North and East Syria economically, although it knows very well that there are more than 5 million people in need of humanitarian and medical assistance, but what concerns it is to win concessions to the regime at the expense of the people of the region.”

Countries are wrestling at the negotiating table to achieve gains in their favor on Syrian soil, bypassing all humanitarian aspects in their negotiations, and one of their methods used is the veto, which is an effective weapon in thwarting any decision that contradicts the interests of these countries.

The people most affected by the veto are the people of North and East Syria who suffer from Turkish attacks and a Russian veto that deprived them of medical and humanitarian aid after the Russians used the veto to prevent the opening of Tal Koçer/Al Yaroubiyah Crossing, which served as an outlet for the people to obtain this aid.

The co-chair of the Future Syria Party Council in the Euphrates region, Ismail Khaled, believes that “Russia’s goal in using its veto against opening Tel Koçer Crossing aims to besiege the areas of North and East Syria economically, even though it knows very well that there are more than 5 million people living there and they are they need humanitarian and medical aid, and the closure of the crossings has exacerbated this humanitarian crisis, and this was confirmed by many parties that medical aid to the people in North and East Syria has decreased by 70 percent.

Ismail Khaled added, "Russia seeks to play the role of the main player in the Syrian crisis, as well as aims to pressure the Autonomous Administration to make concessions in favor of the Syrian regime, and to extend its full control over Syrian territory, thus achieving a victory over the countries that compete with it to win the Syrian crisis."

Khaled pointed out that "the importance of Tal Koçer Crossing does not only lie in humanitarian cases, but also there are refugee camps in the administration areas who are in desperate need to aid, and the lives of millions are related to the opening of this crossing, and if the crossing is opened, it will have a significant impact on the situation in the area. In general, in politics there is no such thing as the human side."

The co-chair of the Future Syria Party Council in the Euphrates region, Ismail Khaled, added, "After the solution to the Syrian crisis came out of the hands of local players, into the hands of international players, such as the Russians and the Americans, the crisis turned from a humanitarian crisis to a political one, and the humanitarian situation was completely marginalized, and each country sought to achieve its interest at the expense of the Syrian people."

Ismail Khaled pointed out that "so far, many rounds of Astana have been held, and it is likely that many sessions will be held for this conference because the goals are unknown, and so far there is no role for Astana in the region.”

It should be noted that with the end of the UN mandate for aid to reach Syria through Bab al-Hawa border crossing, and with the submission of a draft resolution to the Security Council to renew the mandate of Bab al-Hawa Crossing and the reopening of Tal Koçer/Al Yaroubiya Crossing, it is expected that Russia will use its veto again against any move regarding the opening of the Tal Koçer border Crossing.
