In the military field, women in north-east Syria have become an example and a model for the women of the world, as the military forces specialized to women in the region are evaluated as organized forces, and the Women's Protection Units which were established in 2013 played a major role in this context and made important steps.

In this context, Newroz Ahmed says, “The struggle that was demonstrated, especially in the spring of peoples was decorated with the color of women, and this struggle was established and crystallized anew with the participation of women.”

This came during an interview conducted by our agency with Member of the General Command of the Women's Protection Units, Newroz Ahmed, about International Women's Day, and the struggle and resistance of the Women's Protection Units.

Newroz Ahmed indicated that women in north-east Syria began a struggle to defend their presence, and said, “Before the eyes of the whole world, the people of the region, especially women were exposed to attacks and crimes, and to counter these attacks many fighters came from outside the country, and joined the humane resistance, these attacks used to target the entire community, and all components of the region.”

That is, its goal was not only to eradicate the Kurdish people, and our fellow fighters who came from abroad discovered this truth and joined our resistance, even the lack of a language in which we could communicate with each other did not constitute an obstacle before us. The pain is one and the spirit is one, and this created a different impression in communicating with the comers from abroad. With the vanguard of women, millions around the world rose up for Women's Revolution.”

Women of the world: We are happy that the Women Protection Units are with us

Newroz noted that the Women's Protection Units have become a symbol of the world's women unity and the unification of various forms of struggle. She added, “The struggle we are waging here has contributed to strengthening women’s organization, obtaining rights, and gaining courage.”

The women revolted in the world said, “We are very happy that the Women Protection Units are with us.” This struggle turned into a struggle for all women, as well as the struggle of society and humanity as a whole.”

On the 8th of March, Newroz said, “This occasion for women is not just a day, but a day of existence, life and struggle.”

For us, the Women's Protection Units, we seek to live this day in all its meanings, in a way that achieves our existence and strengthens the struggle and organization, not only being satisfied with this day, but rather decorating all days with the colors of women, so in this spirit we continue and will continue the struggle.”

Due to Women Protection Units’ presence, women are now participating in military fields

Regarding the impact of women's struggle in the areas of north and east Syria on the military side, Newroz said: “There has been a great impact. Many personalities and organizations from different countries of the world have communicated with us, either directly or through messages, and what happened on the ground contributed to breaking the existing boundaries between men and women and among peoples too.

The presence of women in the military forces has been strengthened, and this is positive, with some shortcomings, while giving great importance to the issue of women's participation in all fields, especially in the military field, and all these gains that have been achieved at the global level occurred under the influence of the struggle waged by women. In the areas of north and east Syria, the People's Protection Units seek to further strengthen this unity.”

Newroz touched on the issue of targeting women and said, “When we make more progress, the dominant regime escalates its attacks, as it sees its death in the development of this struggle, adopting the same mentality of ISIS mercenaries against women and violating all humanitarian standards.

Poineering women have been targeted continuously, in particular the recent attack on the martyrs Hind and Saada, with the aim of terrorizing society, in an effort to end the struggle achieved by the vanguard of women, but these attacks will never undermine our resolve.

We are preparing to face threats

With regard to the attacks targeting the areas of north and east of Syria, Newroz said, “Their attacks will continue because the Justice and Development Government and the Nationalist Party continue to pursue a policy of war, exploit international silence and escalate their attacks.”

We, in turn, are preparing to confront these attacks because for us it is a fateful issue. They seek to exterminate us, and we seek to continue life. They aim to strike this struggle that was founded with the leadership of women.

What is happening in our occupied areas are brutal and filthy matters that have not happened anywhere or any other time. We do not accept the life that the enemy imposes on us. Either we live freely or we will not accept to live this life.”

Newroz noted that the main task for the Women's Protection Units is to liberate occupied areas such as Afrin, Serêkaniyê and Girê Spî, and said in this regard, “In order to work to liberate these areas, we are strengthening our military forces, and we have strong preparations because this issue for us is a fateful issue. In particular, during this year we are seeking to escalate our struggle.”

Never again will there be an opportunity to make such gains

Newroz confirmed that women have made a great struggle during this period, “Women have strong determination and will, and this is what contributed to the revival of societies on the land of Mesopumia. Everyone must work in order to defend the values and gains that have been achieved. We must not depart from it because there can never be an opportunity to realize these gains again.”

Despite all the attacks, we must develop these values further. We are proud to continue this struggle, and this is the only way to achieve freedom, and I say to all women of the world that we have brought our struggle for freedom to this level through unity and joint struggle, and we must continue in this manner. Many female fighters martyred for these values, and on this occasion I commemorate all the martyrs, and we renew the pledge to continue the struggle according to their approach.”

The truth of this struggle must be shown

Many books and films have appeared about the struggle of the peoples of the region, and about some works that seek to distort the reality of the escalating resistance in the region, Newroz said that the truth of this struggle must be shown, “The struggle that we are waging, and which was achieved thanks to the blood of martyrs such as Avista, Arin and dozens of fighters have become the property that belongs to all of humanity, and some people tried to benefit from this struggle, and to exploit it in commercial issues, while others tried to show that only the international fighters engaged in this struggle.

International fighters fought a bitter struggle on this land. We are very proud of their friendship, and the world must know that. In addition, we must show the truth about the resistance that the people of the region made.”

Newroz appealed to everyone to escalate struggle, “Everyone can prepare a book, or produce a movie or song, and although we have different tasks, we are ready to support them because it is important to document this struggle for history, and women are the most capable of embodying it because the authoritarians seek to seize and distort this struggle.”
