According to a source close to the administration, Blinken asked Mali to bring people "more hard-line" on Iran.

Malley began forming his new team, and once he was in place, he would begin developing a strategy to reconnect with Iran. US officials say Malley is in contact with his European counterparts and officials from Israel and the Gulf states.

"Secretary Blinken is building a dedicated team, drawn from clear-eyed experts with a diversity of opinions," State Department spokesman Ned Price said. "That team is led by our Special Envoy to Iran, Rob Malley, who has a proven track record of successfully negotiating restrictions on Iran's nuclear program."
