Biden said in a tweet on his official account on "Twitter": "I hope that the Senate will deal with its constitutional responsibilities regarding impeachment while working on other urgent actions."

Biden's call coincides with the Senate's duties to conduct a trial of outgoing President Donald Trump, and his Senate trial will not begin until after this date.

"I hope that the Senate leadership will find a way in which it can deal simultaneously with its constitutional responsibilities regarding impeachment and with other urgent matters of this nation," Biden said in his statement.

On Wednesday evening, US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi signed the impeachment resolution against Trump for the second time in preparation for his referral to the Senate.
