Union of Human Rights Associations: Detainees' lives in Turkey's jails are in danger

The report indicated that no necessary measures were taken during the outbreak of the Coronavirus, and thus the lives of detainees in Turkish prisons are in danger.

In the report, it was mentioned in the statement issued by the General Directorate of Prisons on November 8: “The General Directorate of Prisons reported that positive cases were found in 117 out of 367 prisons, and 12 of them lost their lives, and this indicates that no necessary measures have been taken to reduce the spread of the pandemic among the detainees, and that he requested the isolation of all detainees, which is why the detainees in Turkish prisons launched an open hunger strike campaign on November 27, 2020 in order to end an intensive isolation imposed on the leader Abdullah Ocalan in all prisons and in society.

The report deals with pressures and human rights violations, which were identified in the following:

"The right to benefit from health care has been obstructed for a long time in prisons, as this situation has reached an intolerable level with the pandemic, and there are many sick prisoners who cannot stay in prisons, and many sick prisoners have lost their lives in prisons.

People infected with coronavirus were reported in many prisons, and the necessary measures were not taken in terms of controlling, stopping its spread and reducing treatment, on December 2, a prisoner named Mohammad Amir lost his life due to his infection with the Coronavirus.

Handcuffs continue to be built in Amad Prison for Women, and prisoners are treated with such inhumane practices.

In many prisons, the human dignity and the conditions of the pandemic are not recognized, and the detainees are interrogated while they are naked, as these practices remained for a long time in prisons, especially in the Prison of Symbol 1 for a while and the imprisonment of women in Amad.

Many magazines and newspapers, including Yeni Yaşam, were banned from entering prisons without a court order, and Kurdish magazines and newspapers in particular are not allowed to enter prisons on the pretext that there is no translator.

There were also reports in the media that detainees were sent to cities far from their families without a decision, and detainees in remote prisons indicated through letters and meetings that there is a great deal of isolation on them.

Arbitrary measures such as disciplinary investigations are among the most important violations in prisons. As a result of these penalties, the release of prisoners has been suspended and restricted, so a small private discussion with the guards leads to an investigation.

There are also many sick prisoners in many prisons, so they must fulfill the conditions for their treatment.

There are cameras in many areas in prisons, so these cameras must be removed in the prohibited areas for the detainees.

Opportunities must also be created for prisoners to carry out cultural and social activities.

Until the prisoners are released, their food and drink must be well preserved, and their vitamins should be improved.

Investigating all detainees, in particular Imrali prison, to see whether the measures taken are in line with the standards or not. Lawyers, human rights organizations and government representatives should also be included in these delegations. "
