Iraqi High Commission for Human Rights: cracking down peaceful protests unacceptable

Iraqi High Commission for Human Rights has criticized cracking down peaceful protests and the use of excessive force calling on the Iraqi Federal Government and the Regional Government in Southern Kurdistan to set hurriedly the debating issues and meet demands of protesters.

A statement was released by the Iraqi High Commission for Human Rights regarding the latest events taking place at the city of Sulaimaniya in Southern Kurdistan.

The statement reads:

''We are gravely concerned about the arbitrary security procedures practiced for the third day successively in dealing with protests that call for the  application of legal and constitutional rights of the people in Region''.

The Iraqi High Commission for Human Rights voices utter rejection to silencing and the use of excessive force in dealing with protesters, and suspending satellite channels as a negative signal to practise civil and political rights and the freedom of expression and peaceful demonstration''.

The Iraqi High Commission for Human Rights called on the security authorities in the city of Sulaimaniya to respect human rights and not to harass people to call for their rights, as well as calling on the Federal Government and the Regional Government in Basur to put an end to their differences.
