The sources reported that the mercenaries of the so-called "West Africa Province" of ISIS, had opened fire with automatic weapons and fired rockets at a convoy of soldiers and elements loyal to it, in the village of Kwumti, 60 kilometers north of the regional capital, Maiduguri.

And one of the security sources told Agence France-Presse that "five soldiers and one element were killed in the ambush," and added later that "the death toll rose to eight."

In the context, two other sources confirmed the same toll, and indicated that four mercenaries were seriously injured in the attack, which occurred around four o'clock in the afternoon GMT.

The convoy was on its way to the town of Baga on the shores of Lake Chad, about 140 km away, as part of the security guard of the state's governor, Babagana Umarra Zolom, who had traveled by helicopter earlier in the day to distribute food to residents who had returned to the town where fishermen live. Two months ago, six years after they fled a deadly attack, the sources said.

It is noteworthy that the so-called "West Africa State" of ISIS split from "Boko Haram" in 2016.
