43 femicides in Turkey and Northern Kurdistan within two Months

In concurrence with advent of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, more than 43 femicides were monitored in Turkey and Bakûr, or Northern Kurdistan, just in two months.

According to ''We Will Stop Femicides Platform'', a right group that monitors violence against women in Turkey, that Turkish authorities target directly, and that women are subject to repression, murder, prosecution besides feminist lawyers and supporters are being murdered at the hands of men as victims of home and societal violence.  

The platform in question has monitored 43 murders against women at the hands of men in the period between October and November, in addition to eight suspicious murder cases, to increase the death toll for those lost lives in unknown conditions to 152.   

453 Femicide Cases  in 2020

According to latest statistics, in a report by the Center for Field, Social and Political Researches regarding femicidal crimes, at least 453 women were murdered in 2020 in addition to 144 others recorded as unknown cases, and that within three days- 14 to 16 – two women were killed in Turkey.

Though Turkey is one of highest countries for violence against women, it has withdrawn from the Istanbul Convention, of the Council of Europe, an anti- violence group that was concluded in 2011.     

17 arrests including females  

Instead to combat violence and femicides, the Turkish Government proceeds to arrest female lawyers and activists, where yesterday 17 members of the Lawyers' Syndicate in the city of Amed, in Northern Kurdistan, were arrested, among which a number of female lawyers and those calling for gender equality, in addition to the going on arrests of female politicians and journalists and members of the People's Democratic Party, the HDP.
