The U.S. Treasury said in a statement that the sanctions include the "Mostazafan Foundation for the Islamic Revolution," which is run by Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and the country's Minister of Security and Intelligence, Mahmoud Alawi.

The U.S. Treasury Department has included in its sanctions list dozens of other personalities and entities, including those associated with the minerals, oil and transportation sectors in Iran.

Commenting on these measures, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo considered that his country's maximum pressure campaign against Iran is succeeding, saying: "The United States should not be a victim of nuclear blackmail by Iran and give up its sanctions."

Pompeo stressed that the United States will implement more sanctions against Iran in the coming weeks and months.
