The office of the Cyprus Republic's President, Nikos Anastasiades, said in a statement issued today: "The presence of the Turkish president at the celebrations of the 37th anniversary of the pseudo-state (the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus) and his visit to the besieged city of Famagusta represents an unprecedented provocation and completely contradicts resolutions 550 and 789 of the United Nations Security Council."

The statement added that Erdogan's plans "undermine the efforts of the United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, to hold an informal five-party meeting" to discuss the settlement in Cyprus, and "do not contribute to creating an appropriate and positive atmosphere for the resumption of negotiations on resolving the issue."

On Sunday, Erdogan is expected to arrive in Northern Cyprus, where he plans to take a "picnic" as he said in the desolate coastal resort of Varosha, known as the "Ghost Town..
