Turkey's main opposition party said that the resignation of Finance Minister Berat Albayrak, through a statement on Instagram, was an unprecedented step and amounted to a "state crisis", and also criticized the sudden ouster of the central bank governor.

Albayrak's resignation, which he attributed for health reasons, comes a day after the appointment of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan his father in law and former Finance Minister Naji Iqbal as governor of the Central Bank instead of Murat Uysal. The reasons behind this move were not announced, but officials attributed this to the decline of the Turkish lira.

At a press conference in Ankara, Republican People's Party's (CHP) leader Kemal Kiliçdaroglu said that Erdogan is running the country as if it is a "family business", adding that the central bank lost its independence. He added that it was also shameful that the main Turkish media outlets had not indicated the resignation for nearly 24 hours.
