SereKaniye camp receives 1st batch of displaced families

The first batch of Serekaniye families who are displaced and reside in the shelters in the city of Hasakah entered Serekaniye camp, located in the east of the city, opposite the spinning mill.

After the Autonomous Administration finished establishing the camp on the 15th of last August, the administration of the "Serekaniye" camp, in coordination with Hasakah Canton Council, announced its official opening on the 16th of the same month.

The transfer of the displaced living in the shelters was scheduled to take place on August 20, coinciding with the approaching new academic year 2020-2021, to equip schools to be in service and to ensure the progress of the educational process, as this had a negative impact on teaching, last year, but it was delayed due to the outbreak of the Corona pandemic and the announcement of the ban.

In implementation of the decision, today the first batch of displaced families was transferred to the new camp, "Serekaniye," and their number reached 70 families. The goal is to empty the shelters, which negatively affected the educational process.

In the camp, all families' data were recorded, and each family was assigned a tent and prefabricated rooms including a kitchen, bathroom and toilet.

The area of the camp is 600 dunums, and 2,660 tents have been erected in it, including 1620 individual tents and 1040 collective tents, equipped with all services of water, electricity and concrete floors. The tents will be given according to the number of family members.

Abdullah Ahmed, one of the displaced who moved his home to the new camp, says, "The camp is better than shelters in terms of services and independence, so we came."

Ahmed added, "The accommodation centers were overcrowded with the displaced, so they were transferred to the camp, in order not to affect the education process in the city of Hasakah."

Abdullah Ahmed thanked the Autonomous Administration for building this camp, and sent a message to the displaced living in the shelters, saying, "Everyone should go to Serekaniye camp because all services are provided there."

The co-chair of the administration of "Serekaniye" camp, Saleh Al-Hamidi, told Hawar News Agency that the process of transferring the families from the shelters to Serekaniye camp "took place in accordance with international health standards and according to the standards of social distancing."

Al-Hamidi added, "The Autonomous Administration has secured all amenities for the displaced, including water, electricity, and independent public facilities for every family inside the camp."
