To support the "march of sovereignty" ... Macron is to Iraq today

Iraqi government sources revealed to AFP that Macron will arrive in Baghdad today, Wednesday, for his first official visit to Iraq since he received the keys to the Elysee in 2017.

According to an Iraqi government source, Macron will meet during the visit, which will last for a few hours, with Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi, President Barham Salih, and other political officials.

According to Iraqi sources, the visit will focus on Iraqi "sovereignty".

French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed in Beirut on Tuesday evening that he will visit Iraq today, Wednesday, where he will launch, in cooperation with the United Nations, an initiative to support the "march of sovereignty" in that country.

"I assure you that today morning I will be in Iraq in order to launch, in cooperation with the United Nations, an initiative to support the process of sovereignty" in this country, Macron said during a press conference at the end of his second visit to Lebanon in less than a month.

Macron will be the most senior official to visit Iraq since Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi assumed the presidency of this country's government in May.

Macron's visit will reflect the message that his Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian carried on his visit to Iraq in mid-July, when he called on Baghdad to "distance itself from regional tensions."

On August 27, the French Minister of the Armies, Florence Parly, visited Iraq, where she met officials in Baghdad and Başur Kurdistan.

The Turkish interventions in Iraq raised the concern of several countries, most notably France, which increased tensions between them and Turkey due to Ankara's intervention in the countries of the Middle East.
