Egypt and Greece signed the agreement defining the maritime zones on August 6th, and the Egyptian parliament ratified it on August 18th.

Greek government's Spokesman Stelios Petsas said, according to Reuters, that it had been submitted to the Greek parliament for ratification on August 26th.

However, Turkey said that the agreement violates its continental shelf and sent a survey ship to an area between Crete Island and Cyprus.

The agreement also overlaps with the maritime zones that Turkey agreed with Libya last year, which Greece described as illegal.

Marine zones or exclusive economic zones give the state rights over natural resources, and the eastern Mediterranean is believed to be largely undiscovered, rich in natural gas.
