AA holds UN responsible for tampering with Turkey at the rate of the Euphrates water

"Turkey's threat to the Syrians with drinking water is immoral," the co-chair of the Energy Office, Welat Darwish, told the Hawar News Agency, after a month of deliberate lowering of the level of the Euphrates River by the Turkish state.

Darwish held the United Nations and the Syrian and Iraqi governments responsible for the "life threatening" of 6 million people in Syria, as a result of Turkey's manipulation of the water rate, calling on them to pressure Turkey to stop what it is doing.

According to the 1987 agreement between Damascus and Ankara on the Euphrates River, the share of Syrian lands is 500 cubic meters of water per second, equivalent to 2500 barrels, Iraq gets 60 percent of that amount, and that is what Turkey opposes, as it pumps between 150 and 200 Cubic meters of water a month ago.

During his statement, Darwish's states indicated that "Turkey's threatening the Syrians with drinking water is immoral," and that it also bears the responsibility of the world powers present in Syria.

The water of the Euphrates is watered by nearly 400,000 hectares of land cultivated with grains, the most important of which is wheat, along with orchards and fruit trees scattered along the banks of the river in the Euphrates basin in northeastern Syria, according to a number of agricultural committees and agencies in different regions.

Three dams, the largest of which is the Euphrates dam near the city of Tabqa, produce 70 percent of the total electrical energy exported to the regions of northern and eastern Syria.
