4 years after Manbij liberation

For 75 consecutive days, Manbij Military Council was able to liberate the city of Manbij starting on June 1, 2016. Nearly 4 years from now, the city people were able to heave a sigh following two years under the occupation of ISIS.

On June 1, 2016, the Manbij Military Council announced Manbij liberation campaign, to liberate it from ISIS, two years after it had fallen under the control of mercenaries.

That campaign tipped the balances against ISIS and its supporters, and was an important step in ending the presence of mercenaries on Syrian territories.

A 75-day battle

The campaign started from the Tishreen Dam east of the city of Manbij, this axis was the main along with another axis that started from Al-Qara Qozaq Bridge towards Al-Hayya district east of Manbij. After about 14 days, the axis of the campaign met, Manbij and mercenaries were besieged before the battles to liberate its neighborhoods began.

The MMC's campaign priorities were avoiding the civilians in the areas of engagement and securing them from ISIS mercenaries who targeted them as they tried to escape and as a result of the large number of civilians stranded in the city .

Manbij Military Council's advance was thanks to its sons. Two months earlier, it continued until it reached to Al-Serb neighborhood and the last mercenary in the city was eliminated after 75 days from the campaign, on August 12, 2016.

Revenge for Abu Laila escalated the fighters' determination

During the campaign, the fighters of the Manbij Military Council sacrificed their lives for the people of Manbij and its martyred leader, Faisal Saadoun, nicknamed “Abu Laila,” who was martyred on June 5 of his wounds in the village of Al-Khafia on the third day of the campaign and rose to the martyrdom rank on 5th of that month .

"Abu Laila martyrdom increased the determination and enthusiasm of the fighters to go on the campaign and liberate the city from the terrorism," Mahmoud Ibrahim Abu Majd, a leader in the Manbij Military Council, who participated in the campaign said.

In honor of his spirit, the Manbij Military Council named the campaign after him to liberate Manbij." declaring the defeat of terrorism and the start of a civil phase that is run by a city administration, to provide its people with services and institutions that meet their aspirations.

The importance of the campaign

Its importance lies in the fact that before the liberation of this city, it was a center for receiving mercenaries from Europe and the world through Turkey to join ISIS and spread in Syria and Iraq, so the liberation of Manbij was a step to cut human supplies to mercenaries.

After the liberation of Manbij on August 12, the SDF launched several campaigns to liberate the area from ISIS, until in March 2019 it was able to eliminate ISIS's military presence on Syrian territory in its last stronghold in the town of Al-Baguz in Deir ez-Zor countryside.
