Adnan al-Mufti:' The Adana agreement cannot be implemented after these years'

Adnan al-Mufti, former head of the Kurdistan Region Parliament and member of the political bureau of Kurdistan Patriotic Union, commented on the issue of implementing the Adana agreement between the Turkish and Syrian sides. Al-Mufti said that its implementation is impossible.

Talks on the re-implementation of the Adana agreement between Ankara and Damascus came after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's visit to Moscow on Monday and held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Putin put forward the idea of reintroduction of the Adana agreement during the press conference following the meeting between the two presidents. Analysts saw it as an indirect expression of Moscow's rejection of the idea of a buffer zone proposed by Washington, saying it would be 20 miles deep(32 Km) without giving further details about it or how to manage it.

Adnan al-Mufti said signing of this agreement at that time was aimed at the Kurdish presence. He continued, "The Syrian reality differed very much from that time. The Kurdish presence is real on the ground and in any new agreement.

He noted that after these years, the Adana agreement has become dead, even if it has been legitimate since its birth, the situation has changed and the reality must be read well. The new Kurdish reality must not be neglected and the implementation of this agreement is impossible under the new developments in the region.

He added that there must be understandings, negotiation and acceptance of the new reality. No one can ignore the role of America and Russia in the region and the international powers must play a positive role in this regard.

Al-Mufti pointed to the war waged by the region and the Kurdish role in the fight against terrorism, pointing out that "it is wrong to ignore this and the international community must stand by the Kurds in the fight against terrorism."

Al-Mufti said, "Dialogue and understanding between the parties on the buffer zone reflect wisdom, and America and Russia are key players in any understanding in the region. The world's national security is linked to the elimination of any terrorist force in the world. These terrorist forces extend their hand to every place in the world and everyone must stand against this global threat.

Al-Mufti concluded there is a clear Kurdish concern about reviving this agreement (the Adana Agreement) and it cannot be applied in the new reality and all parties concerned must read this reality well and rely on the principle of dialogue and understanding.
