Moscow and London have agreed to return some diplomats to the embassies of the two countries with a reciprocal expulsion of diplomats earlier this year.

"We have reached a general agreement that we will begin to return the diplomatic crews to Moscow and London sometime in January," the Russian ambassador to London Alexander Yakovenko said in a television interview.

"I'm not sure if this will apply to all employees, but at least half of them will be back."

Britain expelled 23 Russian diplomats after accusations that the Kremlin was responsible for a poison gas attack on former dual agent Sergey Scrippel and his daughter in the English city of Salisbury in March, while Russia, which denied any role in the incident, expelled an equal number of staff from the British embassy in Moscow.
