Sheikh Baqi: Northeast Syria with strongest papers currently

The Secretary-General of the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Party, Jamal Sheikh Baqi, talked to Hawar news agency about the latest political developments witnessed in Syria in light of the Turkish threats against the north and east of Syria, especially after the US President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw his country's troops from Syria, Russia's policy towards these recent variables, the regime's position.

The current stage has not surprised us politically, it is a new stage we have turned to

In the context of our reporter's question about his assessment of the political situation in the regions of North Syria, especially after the Turkish threats against the region, Sheikh Baqi said, "The region is witnessing an emergency state. We were aware of that at the political level, and what we live today is not a surprise in our regions, it is a new phase that we have turned to and can be described as new, but not as promoted in the media and social media that the region is turning towards major political and military disasters. On the contrary, it is more positive for our people and our regions."

In the current changes, the northern and eastern regions of Syria will have the strongest papers

Sheikh Baqi added, "Today, in light of these political and military changes, we are sure that making the decision is at our hands, and that any changes will take place in the region, the Kurdish people and the people of north-east of Syria will have the upper hand there. Our strongest papers are that our doors and channels are open to communicate with all parties, and because we have opportunities at all levels more than ever before as a result of the removal of what these parties have been claiming, in particular the American presence, in addition to what the region has reached to in the past eight years at the security and organizational level, and its ability to combat terrorism in Syria."

The changes and calculations will not only be on the north and east of Syria, but will include all Syria

Sheikh Baqi said, "In terms of the American decision to withdraw the US troops, if applied on the ground as they say, the circumstances and calculations would change not only in the region, but in the whole of Syria and on all political and military parties and forces intervening in Syria."

The US withdrawal, if applied, would remove the arguments of Russia and the regime towards the Syrian north

 Sheikh Baqi continued that the political decision of the US withdrawal from Syria may help to limit the Turkish intervention in the Syrian territory saying, "The Turkish intervention in Syria will not only target the Kurdish people or North Syria, but is a target to the whole of Syria and its geography, especially after the exit of the American side if they really did that. The Russian and Syrian sides would not stay silent towards the Turkish attacks, especially after the withdrawal of America from the region because the Turkish intervention in the Syrian territories is not in the interest of the Russians and the regime, but they may stay silent for a while to force the region to make concessions to Russia and the regime due to the strong desire of the Russians to get the helm of leadership in Syria."

Russia today will not be as the former

As for the assessment of the next stage, especially the Russian position towards the north and east of Syria, Sheikh Baqi said that Russia is obliged today to change its policy towards the region after the recent US decision to withdraw from Syria, and he said that Russia will not be the former Russia towards our regions. The Russians used to use the Turks as a pressure paper on the people of northern and eastern Syria to make many concessions, and what happened in Afrin is the best evidence as they withdrew from some of the points where they were present in conjunction with the Turkish attack on the city.

Sheikh Baqi made clear that Russia wanted to blackmail the peoples of the region to move away from the International Coalition, but today, who are on the ground are Syrians, and they have no reason to move away from the rights of the peoples of the region. As we know, Russia insists to achieve its interests and the first of which is to obtain the leadership of the solution in Syria without a disputed so it will not give up its interests in favor of the Turks, and will be more flexible with the north and east of Syria and its people politically and militarily.

Supporters of the regime will change its previous mentality towards the region

As for the position of the regime after the American withdrawal, Sheikh Baqi said, "The Syrian regime since the Syrian crisis and so far has been following the approach of denying the existence, and is not capable of accepting the other, but the supporters of the regime such as Russia and Iran will work to convince the regime to abandon its old mentality to help reaching some solutions."
