America withdraws from Syria

This week, the Arab newspapers have touched upon the failure of the formation of a Syrian constitutional committee, the decision to withdraw the US troops from Syria and the resignation of the US Defense Secretary James Matisse.

Al-Sharq al-Awsat (The Middle East): The "guarantors" failed to from a Syrian constitutional committee

The Arab press this week referred to the meeting of the countries involved in Syria which call themselves the guarantors to form a constitutional committee as they desire. Al-Sharq al-Awsat said, "The foreign ministers of Russia Sergey Lavrov, Turkey's Mouloud Jawish Oglu and Iran's Mohammad Javad Zarif failed to form the Syrian constitutional commission during their meeting with the international envoy Stephan de Mistura in Geneva last Tuesday."

Al-Hayat: In a surprise move, Trump withdraws the US troops out of Syria

Al-Hayat referred to the US decision to withdraw from Syria, and said that Trump stated on Twitter, "We defeated IS in Syria and that was the only reason for which our troops were present there during my presidency." Earlier, the US officials told Reuters, "The United States is examining the withdrawal of all its forces from Syria as it approaches the end of its campaign to regain all the territories that were controlled by IS."

For its part, al-Quds al-Arabi newspaper referred to the external positions of the American withdrawal, and said, "The American decision has confused all the key players in Syria, breaking the current status in the Syrian scene for setting several scenarios for the future.

The newspaper added, "The regime in Damascus did not comment on the decision of the White House to withdraw the American forces from the east of the Euphrates. There is something innocent in the sudden move, so it seems, at least until now, for it."

The Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the US President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw its troops from Syria was right during his annual meeting with the media on Thursday, knowing that Moscow has not seen yet any indication of the start of the withdrawal.

For her part, the French Minister for European Affairs Nathalie Loiseau confirmed on Thursday that France remains committed militarily in Syria.

In London, the British Foreign Office said that IS had not been defeated in Syria yet. She added, "The United Kingdom will remain a part of the International Coalition and its campaign to deprive IS of the control over the territory and ensure its decisive defeat."

The German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said in a statement, "IS state has declined, but the threat has not been over yet."

For his part, the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israel will escalate its battle against the forces allied with Iran in Syria after the withdrawal of the US forces from the country.

Al-Hayat : Fears of "chaos" in the White House after Matisse's resignation

"The resignation of the US Secretary of Defense James Matisse has caused fears of chaos exacerbation in the White House and fueled tensions between the United States and its traditional allies, especially since the minister was trusted of," the newspaper said. Matisse who was one of many senior officials who left the White House did not hide that he was leaving the administration as a result of intractable differences, but expressed that in a "polite" way in his letter of resignation to Trump.
