Baghdad warned Kurdistan Region's government of closing Freedom Movement Offices

The letter came after a delegation of the Freedom Movement went to the Iraqi capital of Baghdad on the 17th of this month to talk about the closure of its centers and offices in Başûr (South Kurdistan).

The officials in the Commission told the delegation of the Movement that they had discussed the Movement's visit to Baghdad and that they had sent a letter to Kurdistan Region's government.

According to the member of the delegation of the Freedom Movement Hussein Karkuki, the letter contained two points:

1. The Freedom Movement according to the laws number 36/2015 of the political parties is a political party that got the approval on 17/12/2017.

2. After the Freedom Movement received the approval, it received a list of number 12 in order to open its centers in the cities. After that, the Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission visited these centers and has learned where they are existed and who are their officials. Therefore, the Freedom Movement enjoys the right to practice politics and open its centers throughout the Iraqi state.

What happened?

On November 25, 2018, the Kurdistan Region's government issued a resolution stating that all parties and organizations that did not obtain the official permission from the Interior Ministry in Kurdistan Region would be closed. After the decision had been issued, the Freedom Movement in Kurdistan Region was closed.

Freedom Movement reviews the Commission

After closing its centers on December 5, a delegation of the Freedom Movement visited the Iraqi capital Baghdad and met on the 6th of this month with the head of the Commission Maen Hittawi and the head of the Political Parties Affairs Directorate Abdullah Fadel.

In the meetings, Hittawi and Fadel considered the decision to close the Freedom Movement centers as "extraordinary" and explained that they would ask Kurdistan Region's government for a clarification because of the closure of the Freedom Movement centers.

Second visit:

The Freedom Movement delegation visited Baghdad for the second time on December 17 and met with the Commission's officials.
