Turkey… 2,000 people sentenced to life imprisonment

AFP quoted from Turkish media source saying that the courts have informed about 1,934 suspects that will spend the rest of their lives in the prison.

According to AFP, among those, 978 people were jailed for life, while 956 were sentenced to life imprisonment that increased the death penalty in Turkey and caused more severe conditions than the usual conviction for life imprisonment.

In recent weeks, there have been multiple police raids across the country against members that AKP suspects that they have links with Fathullah Gulen, especially in the armed forces.

Since the attempted coup d'état, the Turkish authorities have arrested some 150,000 people, including politicians and human rights activists, and have dismissed similar number from jobs in the state's various institutions.

It is noteworthy that Turkey is one of the countries whose citizens seek refuge in Europe. According to a report released by the Office for European Asylum Support on 11 December, Turkey has been among the top five countries in the world over the past few months.
