Services Committee prevents a disaster in Deir ez-Zor west countryside

The heavy rains in Deir ez-Zor since the beginning of November have caused the floods that caused the rise of the water of the Muhimida dam in the western countryside of Deir ez-Zor, which has become a fear for the inhabitants of the surrounding villages.

DEIR EZ-ZOR

The continuous rainfall since the beginning of November with high density in most areas of North-East Syria led to the formation of many torrents in the Syrian Badia, and they were collected in the lowlands to form lakes that covered most of the lowlands and valleys.

Muhimida dam is located 5 km north of Muhimida village between a valley and a low area. It is considered an extension of the village and a water-collecting area behind the 250-meter-long dam with a width of 6 meters.

After the recent heavy rains, the torrents' pour was in al-Baqar valley behind the dam, and since the vents of the dam has been closed since years by the owners of agricultural lands so as not to pass water in a 4 km farm by the agricultural lands that was established years ago.

Under the high pressure of water, the dam was cracked, so that a large part of the residents would go to the municipality of Muhimida and the Services Committee to save the situation as soon as possible in order to prevent a disaster in case of breaking the dam, which could lead to the sinking of the village of Western and Eastern Muhimida, Safira, Hawaij Bu Mas'a whose inhabitants reached to 20 thousand.

The Services Committee quickly dispatched workers and a machinery to open a water channel towards the river and repair the previously destroyed valves of opening the turbines of the dam in order not to open them.

A valves' repairing workshop worked for a whole day. A workshop for digging workers and machineries works on the other side to open the channel in full.

Mohammed al-Waid from the village of Muhimida said, "The water in al-Baqar valley's dam has become at a high level and this is very dangerous as if this dam broke, it would threaten a number of villages with flood."
