Agriculture Committee seeks to solve farmers' problems, achieve good production

The area of agricultural land in villages liberated by Jabhat al-Akrad and Jaish al-Thewar in 2016 in al-Shahba is about 500 hectares of irrigated land and more than 3,500 hectares of rain-fed land. The areas of al-Shahba are famous for growing wheat and potatoes and are famous for pistachios.

The agricultural sector in al-Shahba has been severely affected by the war in Syria for more than seven years. Farmers are suffering from the loss of fertilizer, seeds and the high price of fuel oil, which affects the annual production.

In order to overcome these problems and shortcomings, the Agriculture Committee in al-Shahba has opened private and public projects for the benefit of the people, including agricultural projects for the cultivation of various types of vegetables such as cucumbers, zucchini, eggplant and spinach and has been planted in sufficient spaces for the farmers of al-Shahba to earn enough profit to secure their livelihood.

The committee also provides basic agricultural needs in both plant and animal types, providing fertilizer, the committee also provides wheat seeds, barley and lentils.

The Agriculture Committee distributed about 3,600 barrels of oil to the farmers about 250 farmers benefited from them, and the distribution was sufficient to water the lands of an estimated area of 450 hectares, which encouraged farmers to grow crops in large spans.

In this context, the co-chair of the Agriculture Committee of al-Shahba Basem Osman said that the committee was able during the agricultural season to secure the diesel fuel to farmers, in addition to the insurance of seeds and fertilizers, he also added, "We have also opened projects to benefit from, thus achieving self-sufficiency in al-Shahba and a part of agricultural production has been exported abroad.

The farmer Abdo Kour Hamdou of Ahres area touched upon the suffering of farmers, "Despite the attempts of the Agricultural Committee to secure agricultural materials for us and work to solve some problems, but there still remains problems stuck, the fertilizer required for spraying on agricultural crops is not available in al-Shahba which leads to a decline in agricultural production."
