Afrin people in al-Shahab benefit from what they planted

Afrin city has been under Turkish occupation and its gangs since 18 March 2017, and large numbers of families were forced to displace from their homes heading to al-Shahba area where they now are living there.

Al-Shahba area's people received Afrin people and contributed with their autonomous initiative to help them where Afrin residents worked as soon as they arrived in the agricultural lands.

The residents worked under the supervision of the Democratic Society Movement (TEV-DEM) to cultivate vegetables and fruits in two separate projects, each with a total area of 60 hectares. The villagers planted vegetables and fruits like aubergine, cucumber, red and yellow watermelon, pepper, marrow, okra, tomatoe and other summer vegetables.

At present, the villagers are harvesting vegetables and fruit they had planted. More than 30 people, including women, men and young people, are harvesting crops.

Workers begin work in the early hours of the morning, and the Democratic Society Movements (DEM-TEV) gives 300 SP per worker per hour of work.

These crops are distributed on a daily basis by communes to Afrin people in all al-Shahab district's villages in addition to the people who are living in Berxwedan and Serdem camps.

In this context, the citizen Zaki Najjar, one of the workers in the agricultural project noted that based on the principle of self-reliance, they contributed with their own potential to secure agricultural land and cleaning from remnants of IS and with the existing agricultural tools re-cultivated vegetables and fruits.

He stressed that they are currently working on growing vegetables and winter fruits.
