The Israeli army said in a statement that "two Israeli Patriot missiles were fired at the Syrian aircraft that violated Israeli airspace."

The statement added that the Syrian aircraft "violated the Israeli airspace two kilometers deep," when intercepted by the missiles.

Witnesses from northern Israel saw the two interceptors missiles and heard the sound of explosions.

Unconfirmed reports noted the death of one pilot in the incident.

The statement pointed out that the Israeli army is in a state of "high alert" following the "escalation of internal fighting in southern Syria," including the intensive activity of the Syrian air force.

The incident came a day after Israel tested its missile defense system.

The missile system activated when two Syrian-made surface-to-surface missiles appeared to be approaching an Israeli air base.
