UN must consider "Sivo" massacre an ethnic genocide

The Syriac Union Party issued a statement to public opinion on the occasion of the 103rd anniversary of the Syriac massacres(Sivo) on June 15,1915.

The text of the statement:

"On June 15, 1915, the Ottoman Empire began its attack on the Assyrian- Syriac cities and villages in the Anatolia regions where the most heinous massacres against a secure people were committed, and the aim was to exterminate this people and expel them from their historic land in a systematic scheme. What made them continue in these massacres is the preoccupation of the great powers at the time of World War I, the martyrdom of more than seven hundred and fifty thousand of our Syriac Assyrian Chaldean people, men, women, children, clerics and intellectuals in these massacres, the displacement of the rest of them and the seizure of all their possessions was a major historical turning point our people towards the abyss and finish, where it had a great impact upon the genocide of the demographic, social, economic and lived survived the massacre in the disastrous psychological condition is still stuck in its mind generation after generation.

Turkey today, led by the Justice and Development Party, adopts the same chauvinistic ideas with their Ottoman ancestors. It does not hesitate to repeat what happened more than 100 years ago to the genocide of the Syriac, Armenian and Greek peoples and to the genocide of most of the peoples of the region in Turkey, Syria and Iraq.

What we want today is to take this issue and turn it from the concept of victim to the concept of defending our rights, our freedom and our cause, as it was a period of breakdown of our people and a black point on the human face.

We also appeal to the United Nations, which sponsors peace and democracy in the world, to apply what is written within its laws and to consider what happened in 1915 by the Ottoman Sultanate is an ethnic genocide. And Turkey must held accountable for this massacre and all the massacres they have committed and continue to pursue these approaches without a strong international deterrent.
