“Ocalan” song by English activist tells leader’s struggle

Lee Brickley, a 30-year-old political songwriter and activist from England, was influenced by the thought and perspectives of the Kurdish people’s leader Abdullah Ocalan, and showing his solidarity with the Kurdish people’s cause, he composed a song named “Ocalan”, saying that Abdullah Ocalan is a revolutionary who fought persecution and called for women’s freedom and all oppressed people in the Mideast and whole world.  

Through the “Ocalan” song, Lee says that he began struggling against the Turkish state in 1984, and assures that although the leader is behind bars, he has inspired millions of people to live freely, reject years of persecution, and liberate women from the chains of traditions and masculine and authoritarian mindset.

Lee sings:

Locked away on an island

Not allowed to see the world

Guarded by a thousand rifles

In a prison lined with dirt

There's a man who inspires millions

to live like they are free

He's a guerrilla in the greatest sense

A revolutionary

He took up arms in '84

to fight the Turkish state

Brickley also touches upon the details of the conspiracy that targeted the Kurdish people leader Abdullah Ocalan in Italy to Kenya reaching Turkey.

Brickley noting how he come to know about the leader, he stated “I learned about Abdullah Ocalan while researching stateless political systems, and instantly became impressed by this system called Democratic Confederalism. I then researched Kurdish history and gained respect for Ocalan as a revolutionary freedom fighter.”

In a move to draw the attention to the Kurdish people’s struggle, Lee said “I wrote the song about Ocalan to help raise awareness about the Kurdish struggle, and also to tell his life story to the world.” He stated.

Brickley also expressed his solidarity with the Kurdish cause in the autonomy, and condemned the Turkish aggression on Afrin calling the international community to act, he said “I believe in the Kurdish cause and wish for Kurdistan to gain autonomy and self-governance through Democratic confederalism. I condemn the actions of the Turkish state in Afrin, and I would like the international community to offer protection to Kurdistan so the revolution can grow and thrive.”
