The YRA issued a statement Wednesday marking Kurdish Women’s Press Day, observed on October 7 each year. The statement highlighted the contributions of Kurdish women journalists and their role in reporting the truth, documenting events, and covering women’s and community issues.

The YRA said:

“October 7 marks Kurdish Women’s Press Day, an occasion that reflects a long history of dedication and struggle by Kurdish women journalists who chose words, the pen and the camera as means of expressing the truth, documenting the reality of their communities, and bringing women’s issues and aspirations to local and international public attention.

On this occasion, we remember the women journalists who were martyred while carrying out their duty to report the truth and document events. They left an enduring mark on the memory of the media and society. We renew our commitment to following in their footsteps, preserving what they documented and protecting the collective memory they helped create.

We also extend our congratulations to all women journalists in Rojava and everywhere on this occasion. We affirm that women’s presence in the media is a right that must be protected and a role that must be supported and developed through professional journalism that places truth, responsibility and objectivity at the heart of its mission, respects diversity, and upholds human dignity and the right to freedom of expression.

Marking this occasion is not merely about commemorating the past. It is also an affirmation that journalism is a mission before it is a profession, and that sustaining this mission is a shared responsibility among media institutions, their workers and society as a whole.

Mercy and eternal remembrance to the women journalists of the free press who were martyred, and greetings to every woman who has continued the journey with a pen, a camera and a voice that refuses to remain silent.”
