YPG renews pledge to escalate struggle

On this date (March 18) of the year 2018, Turkey and its mercenaries occupied Afrin, following an occupation attack carried out on January 20 of the same year, during which the people demonstrated unparalleled resistance over a period of 58 days.

Today marks 6 years since the occupation of Afrin, and in this context, the General Command of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) issued a written statement which read

“In the past hundred years, the Kurdish people have fallen treacherously between the claws of cultural genocide, where the colonial system has received the approval of international powers. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the genocidal powers divided the Kurdish existence between four regional countries, There is no doubt that the attack on the city of Afrin aims to prevent the Kurdish people from living on their land.

In 2018, the Turkish occupation state carried out a comprehensive attack on the city of Afrin for 58 days, using the latest military technologies and using mercenary groups, with the help of international forces. It is clear that the attack on Afrin was approved by the imperialist powers that have influence in Rojava and Syria. The resistance of the era in Afrin was a unique event. Whereas the sacrifice and resistance of our people and forces in Afrin put the occupying state in a very difficult position, and proved once again that our people are capable of defending themselves. During these two months, hundreds of our comrades and the people of Afrin, with their very limited capabilities, joined the resistance and struggle such as Avesta Khabur, Ilan Dara, Artesh Hakkari, and the leader Karkar Ereş, and hundreds of our other comrades. In the past 6 years, the demographic composition of Afrin has changed, the Kurdish people have been displaced, human rights have been violated under sight of the whole world.

The occupation of Afrin is a crime against humanity and international law. That is why we in the People's Protection Units confirm once again that we will continue our struggle until the liberation of Afrin and all the occupied areas. We remember all our comrades who martyred in the resistance of Age in Afrin, and we repeat our pledge to them to follow in their footsteps by escalating the war of freedom.
