Yazidis of Afrin celebrate Khidr Elias feast

The Yazidi community demonstrates its connection to nature in all its religious and social celebrations. One such Yazidi festival is Khidr Elias, also known as Bêxwîn (Without Blood).

In the Yazidi faith, Khidr Elias is considered an immortal figure, the angel of agriculture and rain. Therefore, there is a connection between this festival and agriculture.

The rituals and ceremonies of this festival begin at the end of January, according to the Eastern calendar. The first day is dedicated to ritual washing and purification. On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, a voluntary fast is observed, and "bloodless" foods are prepared. During this festival, the slaughter of animals and hunting are prohibited. As for the main celebration, it takes place on Thursday.

In Tirbê Spiyê, the Yazidi House of Afrin celebrated the Khidr Elias festive among displaced Afrin residents currently living there.

In this context, Suleiman Jaafar; the co-chair of the Yazidi House of Afrin, explained that the Khidr Elias festival is a sacred occasion, emphasizing their commitment to preserving and protecting authentic Kurdish culture.

He added that they hope this festival will mark the peaceful return of the people of Afrin and Shahba to their land and homes, concluding, "The return must be facilitated by the Internal Security Forces, as we have faith in our forces and fighters."
