World Union Organization for Arabic Press condemns arrest of journalist Hassan Zaza

The World Union Organization for Arabic Press expressed its condemnation of the arrest of its colleague, journalist Hassan Zaza, who was detained in Damascus by the security forces of the Syrian Transitional Government on Friday, June 27, 2025.

In a statement, the Union said, "We strongly denounce the actions of the Syrian General Security apparatus in arresting our esteemed media colleague, Mr. Hassan Zaza, our representative in Syria and a member of the General Council of the Free Media Union, on Friday, June 27, in the capital Damascus."

It added, "We express our strong condemnation of this arbitrary arrest, which constitutes a blatant violation of press freedom and the right to expression, and a clear breach of international charters that guarantee journalists the ability to carry out their work freely and safely, without persecution or intimidation."

The Union further stated that since the moment of the arrest, urgent contacts and official appeals have been initiated for the immediate release of the detained colleague, but these efforts, along with appeals from fellow journalists inside Syria, have received no response so far. This raises deep concern for his health and psychological condition, especially since he is an elderly man suffering from health issues that require care, not detention.

The World Union Organization for Arabic Press holds fully responsible the parties involved in this action for the safety of colleague Hassan Zaza, noting that the continuation of his detention is a dangerous policy that undermines the status of a free press and sends negative messages to both the international and local media communities.
