Workers at Bab al-Salama border crossing protest against wage cuts

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported today that workers at the Bab al-Salama border crossing with Turkey, in the northern Aleppo countryside, are continuing their sit-in for the second consecutive day, in protest against the decision to reduce their wages.

According to the SOHR, workers' wages were reduced by 10 $ per truck, which sparked a state of anger and resentment, especially given the difficult living conditions in the region.

The protests witnessed noticeable tension after a number of protesting workers were subjected to assaults and harassment by officials at the crossing administration, which prompted them to hold on to their demands and call for the cancelation of the decision.

Workers affirm that their daily wages are the primary source for securing their living needs and supporting their families, considering that the decision to reduce wages constitutes an additional burden that increases their economic suffering.

The sit-in began in the city of Azaz yesterday, Saturday, in response to the same decision, in a move that reflects the escalating tension between the workers and the crossing management.
