Leader delivered a new message on February 27 on the occasion of the first anniversary of the launch of the “Peace and Democratic Society” call, in which he also addressed the role of women. Women from the cities of Hasaka and Afrin spoke to our agency about the message and the role of women in democracy and freedom.

Khalida Bouti affirmed that the message of Leader Abdullah Ocalan is a source of pride, saying: “Women must play their role in society, because they are the foundation of this society. Without women, society cannot build its system. Women are the force that has struggled against patriarchal and oppressive mentalities for thousands of years. Women must strengthen their role in society and intensify their struggle against injustice. Women are capable of achieving freedom and democracy in society.”

She pointed out that, in light of the current path the region is going through, women’s role and rights are being ignored in the Syrian constitution, concluding: “Housework alone is considered a woman’s duty. But we, free and steadfast women, through the philosophy of ‘Woman, Life, Freedom,’ will reclaim our rights. For this reason, we will not stop struggling until democracy and freedom are achieved.”

For her part, Jihan Khaled stated that Leader Abdullah Ocalan’s message to women is a legacy they can use to strengthen their struggle against current oppression. She said: “No one can violate women’s rights, because women have been educated in the ideas and philosophy of Leader Abdullah Öcalan. Women have connected with women around the world and are working according to the Leader’s philosophy to ensure women obtain their rights. The peace process will succeed with women’s freedom.”

Meanwhile, Koli Mohammed noted that women are subjected to many attacks at this stage, adding: “Women are the foundation of society and the family. Without them, there would be no society or family. But under the capitalist system, they seek to destroy women’s will. Leader Abdullah Ocalan gives great importance to women, yet they want to annihilate them. However, as women, no state can break our will. We always unite around Öcalan’s thought. Our call today is for all women to always take to the squares to demand their rights.”
