Women’s Media Union concludes its fourth conference

The fourth conference of the Women’s Media Union was held at the Rojava University hall in Qamishlo, in the Jazira Canton of North and East Syria. The conference focused on reviewing the union’s work and internal regulations, followed by the election of a new 31-member board. The outgoing board members were honored, and the conference concluded with a statement read by journalist Zilan Abdo.

The statement said:

"Under the slogan 'By Developing the Free Media Union, We Will Be the Voice of the Women’s Revolution,' we held our fourth conference on November 8, 2025, in Qamishlo, with broad participation and strong enthusiasm drawn from women’s struggle. We dedicate our conference to the spirit of our comrade Jihan Belkin, and in her memory, we remember comrades Nazem Dashtan, Golistan Tara, Hiro Bahaa Din, Rosida Mardin, Aziz Koiloglu, Sayed Efran, Akid Roj, Arkish Sarhad, Akhin Qamishlo, Afrin Afrin, and all martyrs of free media, with full respect and loyalty."

The statement added: "Our conference comes at a time of significant developments in the world, the region, and Kurdistan. Through broad discussions and evaluations, the conference laid a strong foundation for strategic decisions to build a free and alternative media.

Modern capitalism faces a comprehensive crisis—economic, political, environmental, and social—which grows daily. Wars continue across the Middle East, from Kurdistan and Syria to Ukraine and Palestine, with women bearing the greatest burden. Modern capitalism, by promoting patriarchy, racism, and religious fanaticism, commits massacres against women, peoples, minorities, and nature, targeting journalists who expose these truths through assassination and oppression."*

The statement noted that societies today are led through successive crises of violence, displacement, and extermination, with policies of killing and looting increasing instead of democratic solutions.

It highlighted the role of leader Abdullah Ocalan’s philosophy of freedom, peace, and democratic society as a path to overcome these crises, emphasizing that women’s struggle for freedom is central to this project. Achieving leader Ocalan’s physical freedom is considered essential for the success of the peace and democratic society project.

Regarding Syria, the statement said:

"After the collapse of the Baath regime, crises in Syria worsened with killings, destruction, displacement, and discrimination against women. As nationalist and religious policies intensified, women were excluded from political and social life. Yet women in North and East Syria confronted these policies through their struggle for truth and proved themselves with awareness and will."

The statement also noted that the Rojava revolution, led by women, defeated ISIS and presented a model of free life based on democratic society, ecological sustainability, and women’s freedom, with participation from Arabs, Syriacs, Armenians, Assyrians, and Chaldeans, making it a revolution for all women and peoples.

It affirmed that despite harsh wartime conditions, journalists in North and East Syria continued their struggle for truth, playing a key role in documenting the revolution. The Women’s Free Media Union will continue to fight for a free and democratic media that expresses the voice of women and society.

The statement concluded:

"The Women’s Free Media Union will continue its organizational, training, and professional efforts, advancing in the ongoing struggle to elevate the voice of truth. As  leader Abdullah Ocalan said about comrade Gewretili Ersöz: her will and struggle for a free life is a responsibility for all. We, too, will continue this path to the end."
