Social media in Turkey was abuzz with news of a horrific murder that took place in the Tasuluk neighborhood in the Arnavutkoy district of Istanbul, where a man shot his wife in the head in broad daylight in front of passersby, after a verbal altercation between them.

According to media outlets, the 40-year-old Harun Gul fired several bullets into the head of his wife, Serpil Gul, 35, on Saturday, which led to her immediate death.

Female murders have increased in recent years in Turkey, especially after its withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention on the Elimination of Violence against Women. Human rights reports have shown that a large percentage of those killed were victims of murders committed by husbands or former partners, as many cases of premeditated murder of women are recorded annually in Turkey.

Despite repeated warnings from the United Nations about the high level of violence against women in Turkey, Turkish women continue to live under the burden of domestic violence, which is rapidly increasing in the country due to the absence of punishment. In July alone, 21 women and 4 children were killed by men, and the deaths of 22 women and 2 children were recorded as suspicious, according to the JIN Agency.
